Kenya: Negotiate Tana River Sugar Project - Business Daily

Kenya's Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni are not the best of friends - that is the impression one gets when the two men are together. But they seem to share a philosophy that is sometimes referred to as ecoskepticism.

We are in the information age, where awareness has infiltrated the world at large. All of a sudden every- body has become a stakeholder in every matter in his (her) community. In the yesteryears the world leaders were at liberty to do whatever "development" projects they could think of. e.g. who was consulted during construction of Mombasa- Kampala Railway? I guess right now should you want to construct Nairobi- Juba Railway there would be so many stake- holders questions to answer. Needless to say the question should be- does every stakeholder's opinion matter? Who should we listen to, and who shouldn't we listen to? My opinion, the leaders should decide on what is "best" for the country and do whatever it takes to accomplish his goals or rather ambitions in order to leave a legacy. e.g. Panama Canal, Suez Canal, Great North Railway in Australia, Uganda Railway to name but afew. Leaders do something great, not eyesores like Muthurwa market! If a leader can not convince his people of a viability of a project, he need not be a leader in the first place!
