Militias are once again wreaking havoc in Tarime district, killing innocent people and destroying property. The latest victims are five innocent people killed in revenge attacks involving two clans.Unless the authorities take decisive steps immediately, the situation could get out of hand, and it's the law-abiding people who will bear the brunt of this needless conflict.
In the past few years, the district has seen far too many inter-clan clashes sparked mainly by land disputes and cattle rustling.
The authorities must get to the bottom of these latest clashes, believed to have been masterminded by self-styled 'warlords'. On Tuesday, a armed militias destroyed 100 acres of maize farms. And yesterday, rival militias retaliated by torching dozens of houses, resulting in the deaths. Since 2001, the two rivals clans -Wakira and Wanchari - of the Kuria community have been clashing regularly. Seven years ago, dozens of people had to flee to Kenya, where they lived in refugee camps for three months.
Peace was only restored after the Government deployed armed police. But a year later, fighting erupted again and has become the order of the day.
This is the time to send a strong message to those who breach the law by attacking others that we live in a civilised society where such behaviour cannot be condoned. The security forces must demonstrate that our country is no place for warlords such as those found Somalia or Darfur's Janjaweed militia.
