LEADERS in Teso have blamed the slow community response to the Prosperity- or-All programme on NRM politicians who lost in the 2006 general elections.

During a meeting at Kumi Hotel recently, the leaders told the micro-finance state minister, Gen Salim Saleh, that the NRM losers were misinforming residents that the programme was meant to 'reward' NRM supporters and 'console' those who lost.

Some disseminated these lies on local radios but for the sake of unity, I will not name them here. If you were not an NRM member, you wouldn't form a SACCO (co-operative society). Given that the opposition won most seats here, people felt left out," said Julius Ochen, the Amuria LC5 chairman.

The meeting was aimed at highlighting the relationship between the National Agriculture Advisory Services and the Prosperity-For-All programmes. It also reviewed the performance of the programmes in the sub-region, which covers Kumi, Katakwi, Kaberemaido, Bukedea, Soroti and Amuria districts.

Kumi Woman MP Agnes Akiror said the Government should not ignore the region because it voted the opposition.

"There's no democracy without the opposition. It's the opposition that helps government correct its mistakes and propel development in the country."

Saleh said the politicization of the programme was a nationwide problem. He said the Uganda Co-operative Savings and Credit Cooperative Union was given the duty to vet credible SACCOS for funding to minimise political interference.

They obviously have it backwards when they expect Iteso to vote them first before they deliver anything. They are putting the horse before the... [Read Full Text]
