WILBROD Oketcho, a leading Ugandan basketball player, died of gunshot wounds after armed thugs attacked him at his home near Kampala.

Quoting a postmortem report yesterday, his father, William Oketcho (West Budama North MP), said a blood clot developed from the gunshot wound and blocked Wilbrod's lungs, killing him. He was attacked at 10:30pm on March 12, at home in Najjeera in Wakiso district, where he lived with his wife and child. The assailants grabbed his wallet and mobile telephone before shooting him in the upper left thigh.

His brother Valerie said as Wilbrod entered the gate, the gunmen suddenly appeared.

"One of them cocked the gun as they ordered him to sit down. Then they took his wallet and phone but shot him as they fled."

As they ran away, Wilbrod stood up, probably prompting the thugs to shoot him. His wife rushed him to Kadic Hospital from where he was transferred to Mulago Hospital for an operation.

The sportsman, according to his father, was due to celebrate his 30th birthday on October 9. He had appeared to be recovering and was due to be discharged when the complication occurred.

A requiem mass will be held today at Christ the King Church in Kampala, before the burial in Paya in Tororo. Wilbrod was also the Electoral Commission's registrar for Kalangala district. Najjeera is one of the places that armed robbers are terrorising, along with Kiwatule, Kisaasi, Ntinda, Naalya, Kyaliwajjala, Namugongo and the areas of the Northern by-pass.

The dead include a policeman, a teacher of Namugongo, Hillary Dickens Muhangi and a woman of Kisaasi.

The Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura, visited the affected areas and urged residents to be vigilant.

"We cannot have a Police officer for every citizen or every village. Preventing crime should be everyone's business. We rely on the cooperation of the population," Kayihura said.
