THANK God for small things, like the average small packages of talent that we saw when Group 2 performed in M-Net's Idols East Africa last Sunday. Thank God because with a much deeper group, our man Faycal (pronounced Fey-sal) might have had a much tougher time making the Top 10.
As it turned out, he made up with appearance (according to the judges) what he could have lacked in singing, and he is in the Top 10, first time a Ugandan is on record as attaining that stage at any Idols show in the world.
He also becomes the first guy to qualify for the Top 10 in these Idols.
What was wrong with Group 2? They all seemed like they were scared of their shadows, especially at the beginning of the songs.
Kenya's Katungulu never picked it up, however, and the sympathy vote did not work for her like it did for Cynthia, and she went home.
Same with Irene, another Kenyan, who just was not there. Zambia's Penjani was up first and did not do a bad job, but maybe Africans do not like small girls.
Home she went, too. Trinah, another Zambian, started slowly but really picked it up, almost overdid it actually, but the judges were all over her, and so was Africa as it turned out. (Glad to see TK stopped saying 'check it out' every time he said something).
And Kawesa, our Ugandan judge and mentor? He still insists on picking who was first and who was last, and getting it all wrong.
He is two out of four now, we will see how his performance pans out. Thought he was supposed to mentor and advise the contestants, not pick who was first and last.
Group 3 is up this Sunday at 6:30pm, and again, we have a Ugandan, Nicollette Kiige, who originally auditioned in Harare, but is Ugandan.
She must be good, having beaten out all those other Zimbabweans trying to get out of their dying country.
