The 5-year out of expected 8 year rule of Ogun State Speaker, Hon Titi Oseni was yesterday terminated, following her sudden impeachment by members of the House of Assembly.
The impeachement which could be described as "coup' was carried out in the chambers of the assembly at about 10.00am by 19 out of the 26 lawmakers, who as at the time of this report were yet to give reasons for their action.
Investigations revealed that, the impeached speaker was far away in Abuja, when her colleagues effected the impeachment, while in the same vein, the governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel was outside the country.
Assembly sources said that, the motion for Oseni's impeachment was moved by Hon Fasinu Sewedo from Ado-igbesa consituency and supported by other members, a development which paved way for Samson Egbetokun from Obafemi-Owode to emerge as the new speaker, and Remi Hassan as deputy.
The impeachment process was said to have lasted about for five minutes, that was after the lawmakers were alleged to have broken into the Speaker"s office where they removed the mace to make their sitting legal.
When our correspondent visited the assembly, staffers were found discussing the issue in low tones, while presence of some chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party{PDP} were also noticed.
Speaking with our correspondent, the chief of staff to the governor, who raced to the assembly on hearing the shocking news said "I am not a member of the House, and I have no comment"
Similarly, when contacted on phone, the embattled speaker told our correspondent that, she has no comment for now.
Reacting to the impeachment saga in a press statement, Mr Ayo Giwa, special assistant to the speaker on media and publicty, said there was no sitting,"therefore the issue of removal or non-removal of the Speaker of the house could not have arisen."
"Rt Hon Titi Oseni who is the legal authority to convene a sitting of the House was on official assignment in Abuja on Thursday, May 15, 2008" the statement explained.

The spokeman emphasised "The Speaker of the House, remains Rt. Hon Titi Oseni. Nothing has changed to invalidate that position."
