The Citizen and Sunday Citizen news editor, Mr Richard Mgamba, is among finalists for the 2008 CNN MultiChoice Africa Journalist Award, according to a CNN press released issued in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
Mr Mgamba joins 22 other finalists from 14 countries in Africa following his special report on the mining sector which was published by the Sunday Citizen on August 26, last year.
"This is a big honour not only to me personally but to the entire editorial team of both Sunday Citizen and The Citizen," Mr Mgamba said yesterday after he read the press release on the list of the finalists.
The Citizen managing editor Bakari Machumu congratulated Mr Mgamba on his nomination.
"On behalf of Citizen staff and Mwananchi Communication Limited staff in general, I congratulate Mr Mgamba for his nomination as one of the finalists. I have no doubt in my mind that he will go all the way to win it in Accra, Ghana.
"Richard's achievement not only explains his brevity and dedication to purpose but also highlights a crucial role MCL is playing in unearthing the rots. This recognition adds up to what our Parliament did in February this year, salute MCL newspapers namely The Citizen, Sunday Citizen and Mwananchi, among others for a job well done in the fight against grand corruption and rip off deals entered into by the Government," he said.
Mr Machumu added hat the nomination was a credit not only to MCL but also Tanzania as a nation, which missed out in last year's nominations.
