At least 50 students will have the opportunity to study environmental science at Higher Education Institutions through the Indalo Yethu Environmental Scholarship Fund.
Indalo Yethu (meaning Our Environment or Our Heritage), which is South Africa's environmental campaign, was launched in June 2006 by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism.
Announcing the establishment of the scholarship this week, Indalo Yethu Chairperson Onkgopotse Tabane said that the Save Tomorrow Today Environmental Scholarship is intended to encourage youth to take up environment as a career path.
Mr Tabane explained that the project will kick off with five scholarships, each worth R50 000, to be awarded to top five winning students whose Energy Efficiency Essay Competition will be selected as the best among the class of 2008 matriculants.
"The five top winning essays will be awarded a four year scholarship and will be expected to work with Indalo Yethu in various community service initiatives when they graduate.
"This initiative is part of our attempt to stimulate conversation about Energy Efficiency in our communities in particular and environmental issues in general as part of the launch of the Energy Efficiency campaign that highlights the Save Tomorrow Today Campaign," said Mr Tabane.
He said the campaign, which is in partnership with Umsobomvu Youth Fund and Old Mutual Foundation will see the training of 10 000 young people to be Energy Savers.
This campaign is meant to stimulate such a conversation as well and plant a seed among youth to care for the environment, Mr Tabane said.
He added that Indalo Yethu has also called on the corporate sector to come on board and sponsor other students who will also be part of this scholarship programme over the next three years.
Only learners who are doing Grade 12 this year are invited to submit a thousand words essay on "how we can all contribute to an energy efficient economy".
The closing date for the submissions of an essay is 16 August 2008, winners will be awarded the bursaries before the end of September ahead of their final examinations.
