RISING demand and soaring fuel prices have kept food prices up despite commencement of the harvesting season.

Traders said the high fuel prices have led to a hike in transport costs, which has contributed to the high food prices.

A litre of diesel costs sh2,580, yet petrol goes for sh2,570. Cargo trucks use diesel.

Kampala's major markets are receiving plenty of food.

A trader at Nakasero said most of the food is taken to southern Sudan, DR Congo and Rwanda.

"The demand for Ugandan food is high. These countries' prices are lucrative. Traders with enough capital poach the supply deep down into the villages," the trader said.
