The Liberian government has vowed to institute stern action against anyone caught hiking the prices of rice, gasoline and other commodities on the Liberian market above government's stipulated prices.
Commerce Minister Frances Johnson-Morris said no one is above the law, emphasizing that the business community must abide by stipulated prices.
Speaking over the weekend at the launch of Government's Consumer's Education Awareness campaign at Redlight, Paynesville, the Commerce Minister also warned that Government will prosecute any business house caught importing sub-standard goods and fake drugs into the country.
Minister Morris said for too long Liberia has been used as a dumping ground for fake, substandard, expired and rotten goods. She noted that Government will use every legal means to protect its citizens against unscrupulous business people.
The Commerce Minister said it was unfortunate that business people continue to import generators and used vehicles without spare parts, most of which often break down few days after purchase.
At the same time, Minister Frances Johnson-Morris is cautioning the public not to allow themselves to be fooled by individuals with selfish interest that the hike in the prices of rice and gasoline which is having a spill-over effect on the prices of other commodities is designed by the Government.
Minister Morris said that hike in the prices of food and gasoline is a global problem, nothing that Liberia has the least price in rice and gasoline compared to Ivory Coast, Guinea, Ghana and Sierra Leone, all of which are selling a gallon of gas for over six U.S. Dollars and a bag of rice for more than USD60.00.
She said government will ensure the continuous availability of rice and gasoline on the market at affordable prices. She, however called on Liberians to return to the farm and grow their own food.
The Government consumers' education awareness campaign is sponsored by the Commerce Ministry and implemented by the Crusaders for Peace headed by Culture Ambassador Juli Endee.
The Commerce Minister lauded Amb. Endee for her continued patriotic duty in assisting the government and people of Liberia, and effectively conducting the campaign.
Meanwhile, Amb. Endee is calling on the Government through the Commerce Ministry to extend the consumers education awareness campaign to all parts of Liberia. She said the campaign is being carried out through door-to-door interpersonal communication, dramas, workshops and culture performances.
