The Ondo State government has disbursed N3 billion to women and youths to empower them within the past three years.

Mrs Margaret Akinsuroju, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development said the amount was part of efforts at empowerment through micro-credit and macro-finances. Akinsuroju said 70 per cent of the amount was disbursed to women as loans. She said the money would have multiplier effect on the micro-economy of the state as many money-spinning small scale businesses would be established.

The commissioner said the state government had also approved N60m as social security for elderly people in the state as part of efforts to reduce poverty.

According to her, elderly persons above 70 years of age would receive N1000 monthly.

The commissioner said N20 million had also been set aside to take care of orphans.

She said a baseline survey on orphans and vulnerable children had been conducted in 20 cluster areas as part of efforts at determining the total number of orphans in the state.

According to her, a total of 152 disabled people were assisted through a welfare programme to the tune of N4.5 million. The commissioner stressed that 25 mentally retarded persons were retrieved from the streets and connected with their relations within and outside the state.

"Fifty-five young persons who were abandoned for various reasons which include allegation of witch-craft were retrieved, treated and rehabilitated.
