VICE-President, Rupiah Banda, has assured the nation that his updates on President Mwanawasa's health are accurate and that he has continued to make slow progress.

Mr Banda said every citizen was aware that the President was ill, but that his condition had not worsened from the time he was evacuated to France.

Mr Banda was addressing journalists at City Airport in Lusaka yesterday shortly before departure for Livingstone to attend the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association conference.

"His condition has not worsened from the time he was flown to France. His condition is stable," he said.

Dr Mwanawasa recently underwent a minor surgery to improve his breathing at Percy Military Hospital in Paris.

The President suffered a stroke while in Egypt attending the African Union summit and had the first operation there before being moved to France for further treatment.

Mr Banda assured the nation that the President was recovering.

"I can't do anything about that," he said when asked to comment on those doubting his health updates on the State House website.

Mr Banda said the Government was happy that people had continued to pray for the President.

"We are happy that the nation is concerned and praying for the President. He is making slow progress," he said.

And speaking on arrival in Livingstone, Mr Banda saluted Zambians for showing unity in seeking President Mwanawasa's healing.

He said going by the unity in prayers by the citizens, it had become clear that Zambian people were so united regardless of their affiliations.

"We are not mourning. Our president is alive, he is fighting and people should not twist facts.

"We have a duty to tell the nation the truth about the President's health and what we have been saying is the truth," he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Banda has scoffed at aspiring presidential candidate, Clive Chirwa for "opting to give his engineering knowledge to people in other countries instead of Zambians."

Mr Banda observed that Professor Chirwa had been saying he teaches engineering every year in China instead of doing that in Zambian where he only came back to seek to become the leader of the country.

Southern Province Minister, Daniel Munkombwe, said the provincial leadership was pleased with the recovery of the President.

Mr Munkombwe said the people in the province were grateful to the Government for the repair works on the Niko-Monze, Kalomo-Kabanga, Livingstone-Zimba and Choma-Namwala roads, which had been in bad conditions.
