FORMER Ambassador to Ethiopia, Segun Olushola, has given reasons for Nigeria to accept the World Court verdict ceding the ownership of the controversial Bakassi Penuisula to Cameroon.

He said Nigeria has no option at least for now than to honour the judgment delivered by the International Court of Justice since both countries in question were parties to it.

Ambassador Olushola, who is also the founder, African Refugees Foundation told Daily Champion in an exclusive interview in Lagos that even though the resolution was not an end to itself, it was mandatory at least, for now for Nigeria to honour it and live by it, pending the outcome of the on going negotiations asking for the contrary.

The diplomat nevertheless asked the world body not to feel unconcerned about the plight of the displaced Nigerians, who lost their homes, property and roots, but to assist them by putting smile on their faces.

He stressed that the Nigerian government also have a lot to do in that respect.

Government according to him, also need to co-opt the attached states and local governments in the provision of accommodation and other means of good living for Nigerians who have lost their homes, property, and unity pending possible reclaiming area.

Olushola, who described Nigeria as the most friendly African nation lauded efforts of successive governments in maintaining good relations with other countries of the world irrespective of their continents.

He pointed out that even though other countries of the world consider Nigeria very important particularly because of her larger market size, it would equally be of benefit for the country to maintain cordial relations with the rest of the world.

Ambassador, I like your peaceful approach to life. This is however not one of the occasions when peace helps. Bakassi is worth fighting for. So, just keep quiet. Yrs PKOwi(Prof Maths)

You live thousands of miles from Calabar and don't care about the people of Calabar. Obasanjo signed over the land because he thought he was going to gain something. He must of been promised some hence his doing it on the quiet without the parliament.Even the Head of State is not patriotic. Britain went to war with Argentina over Faukland miles away from London.Why?. Because few wales/English people… [Read Full Text]

Hi folks !!! I think there is a problem of misunderstanding here. First off all I want to know why the so called indigenes of tho would be cedded Bakassi peninsula are leaving the land? Have they been ordered by any body to vacate the land?

Ihe transfer here is transfer of sovereignty from one country to the other. If the courts have ruled the matter in favour of Cameroon, it therefore means that the land becomes Cameroon's and the people automatically.

If anyone sees that he doesn't like becoming a Cameroonian , then they can then apply… [Read Full Text]

Proponents of the constitutional argument fail to recognize the clear distinction between treaty making and implementation. In the context of treaty making or ratification, a country such as Nigeria or Cameroon acquiesces to be bound by a treaty. The process invariably involves a transfer of a limited aspect or limitation of supreme national sovereignty to the supreme collective sovereignty. Thus, when Cameroon and Nigeria ratified the treaty on the ICJ compulsory jurisdiction, they obligated their countries to respect and honor the ICJ decision. Conversely, implementation of a treaty, sometimes referred to as domestication, may require legislative action when the performance… [Read Full Text]
