President Yoweri Museveni has urged churches to exercise their freedom of worship responsibly in order to promote peace, security and development in the country.

"The policy of the NRM Government is to respect religious freedom and beliefs as provided in our constitution.

This freedom, however, must be exercised responsibly in order to promote the common good of our people," Museveni said last week.

He noted that people's lives had fundamentally changed through evangelism and education right from the inception of religion in Uganda.

Museveni's message was contained in a congratulatory message that was read by lands minister Daniel Omara Atubo during celebrations to mark the 40th anniversary of Lira Diocese.

Two priests and two deacons were also ordained during the same function at the Ordination Ground in Lira.

The priests were George Humble Opio and Bernard Aporo, while the deacons were Alex Eyok Acek and Denis Odur.

The bishop of Lira Diocese, Joseph Fanzelli, presided over the ordination.
