South Africa have retained the overall title of the biennial Africa University Games during the fifth edition in Kampala.

South Africa emerged top of the table with 20 gold, 12 silver and 10 bronze medals, ahead of second placed hosts Uganda and Algeria in the third place.

Uganda gathered 12 gold, 19 silver and 25 bronze medals while Algeria and 11 gold and silver medals each and 7 bronze medals.

The win makes South Africa the only team to have won the title on consecutive editions since the first edition in 1974. South Africa first won when they hosted the event in 2006.

Uganda's position improved by one place from third in the previous edition, swapping with Algeria who finished second in South Africa.

Speaking at the closing at Makerere University yesterday, Federation of Africa Universities Sports Union (FASU) president Hassan Chikh attributed the poor turn up for the games to another competition for Southern Africa universities due next week.

Only 15 of the over 30 countries expected for the games showed up in Kampala.

Chikh said FASU's executive was due to sit and decide whether or not to postpone the next edition of the games because of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

"We have not yet decided which country will host the 2010 edition. We may postpone it because Africa will be hosting the soccer World Cup. It is important to us," Chikh told the press after the closing ceremony.
