The Mozambican government is putting the map of all mining licences in the provinces where there is substantial mining activity on-line, so that it can be consulted by anyone with an Internet connection.
The head of the mining registry department in the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Castro Jose Elias, told AIM that initially the maps of Manica, Tete, Zambezia and Nampula, the provinces with the most intensive mining activity, will go on-line. Next year Cabo Delgado and Niassa provinces will join them.
This will knock out a layer of bureaucracy and speed up the issuing of mining licences. Currently when a company asks for a licence to explore a particular area, the provincial mineral resource directorates have to go through paper records to find out whether the area is already occupied. They have five days to do this.
But computerisation means that the applicant can go on-line and find out at once whether the area he is interested in is free, or already licensed to somebody else.
"The priority for the map of mining licenses is for those areas where there are more than 250 requests for mining exploration", said Elias. The southern provinces of Gaza and Inhambane "are only receiving 10 requests, and that's nothing".
Next year, he added, the map of the mining licences will be linked to the land register of the Ministry of Industry, which will show whether any of the land mining companies are interested in has already been earmarked for industrial purposes.
Putting the mining maps on-line is costed at 500,000 meticais (about 21,000 US dollars).

This entire procedure can be made a lot more simpler if there were on-line,transparent instructions and explanations.Wouldnt you agree? Thats all im asking!
