As the Bell Pearl of Africa Music (Bell PAM) Awards gets close to the end of the upcountry talent search, the awards were over the weekend in the eastern town of Jinja.
Jinja has remained chained to Kampala despite its distance from the capital.
For an audience that easily accesses quality music, it takes great talent for local artistes to impress.
The Jinja launch has always attracted several artistes from Kampala. And it was the same story on Saturday at the Crested Crane Hotel - with over 25 artistes lining up to perform.
Time check 9p.m and the fireworks lit up the skies above the source of the River Nile.
Nkwanzi Troupe stormed the stage with two 'multilingual pieces.' Nkwanzi, which started off as a traditional dancing group three years ago has strong hopes in their seven-track Isilili album to do what Nile Beat did in 2004, beating Ndere Troupe, The Samads and Annet Nandujja for Best Cultural Group.
Inspired by Snoop Dog and 2Pac, Jesnase Dogg came in fusing hip hop, R&B with Afro beat. The result is what we listened to in his elementary message on Koona Dance and Taata ne Maama.
"My dad had so many children. In my senior four, I had to look for my own fees. But today, so many people come to me asking me to read for them their text messages," he told The Weekly Observer. But even as he counts luck on his education, Dogg is still finding it hard to make a mark on the music scene. Since 2000 when he entered the music industry, he has no album to his name.
Pal Sounds' Ayub Khan who was nominated last year in the eastern category, is back with the Akuzalira Omwana album.
The Huddle Bliss Family put up an energetic performance, rapping in Lusoga.
Voice of Busoga's Ilungo Jonathan who has always performed at the awards but without a single nomination has a new album Bokotolo, which seems not to be popular.
Gen. Mega Dee chose not to impress, saving his best for his concert the following day at Kakindu Stadium.
There were other performances by No Creature, Desire Luzinda, Mowzey Radio & Weasel, Toniks, Born Ugandan and Obsessions, but it was Bebe Cool who carried the day.
