Keren

The Chairperson of the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW), Ms. Leul Gebreab, said that it is the responsibility of the entire society to ensure active participation of women in all domains.

Speaking at a conference on gender equality that was held recently in Keren, she stressed the need to promote awareness about gender equality among members of the society. Different topics, including gender issue, social relations and differences between both sexes, consequences of discrimination on the basis of gender, international women movement, Eritrean women's movement and the Eritrean government's policy regarding the gender issue, among others were discussed at the conference.

Ms. Leul further pointed out that despite the fact that Eritrea has scored encouraging achievements in ensuring the active participation of women in all aspects of labor, a lot still remains to be accomplished. In this respect, she indicated that the low level of education and underage marriage are the main factors that cause low women's participation in different spheres. Expressing appreciation to the Administration of the Anseba Region for organizing the gender conference, the NUEW Chairperson stressed the need for making relentless efforts to promote women's equality and effectively address the gender issue.

Following discussion on ways of ensuring equal participation of women in all sectors, reduction of mothers' death rate during pregnancy and delivery, enhancing women's participation in leadership at the political level and the like, the participants of the conference adopted a number of resolutions and recommendations, including the need to introduce the gender issue in the curriculum, raising the number of women in decision making and conducting campaigns to promote the awareness of the society as regards gender equality, among others.
