The Democratic Party (DP) rally, which was scheduled to take place in Masaka on Wednesday, flopped following a disagreement between the district party officials.

The district Police commander, Haruna Isabirye, said they had permitted DP to hold the rally at Masaka Mayor's Garden.

The district chairman of the Uganda Young Democrats (DP youth wing), Dennis Majwala, said they were instructed to organise a rally but the DP district head, Ben Bukenya, did not make the necessary arrangements.

"I received a communication from our the party spokesperson, Betty Nambooze, to organise the rally and I passed over the information to Bukenya. I do not understand why he has decided to keep out of this."

A source told The New Vision that the rally, which had earlier been code named 'bye-bye teargas' was changed to a consultative meeting on land matters. This allegedly sparked off the disagreements among the party members.

Bukenya, who was flanked by the party president, Ssebaana Kizito, said was not party to the planned consultative rally and it was being organised behind his back.

"I do not think that our party boss will participate," he said.

Ssebaana had gone to the Masaka Chief Magistrate's court to answer charges of uttering a false document related to the murder of the late Dr. Andrew Kayiira.

MPs Erias Lukwago (Kampala Central) and Isa Kikungwe (Kyadondo South) are jointly charged with Ssebaana.

After the court session, Ssebaana drove off to Kampala.

Nambooze, who was one of the people who had planned the rally, went to the Mayor's Garden and no one was there.

One of the district party leaders, Robert Ssenyondo, accused Bukenya of failing DP activities for his selfish interests.

"What is wrong if other people, besides Bukenya, organise a party rally? He has failed us on several occasions. We shall get rid of him come September."

He said the rally had been postponed to August 29.
