Kampala

The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has destroyed fake goods worth sh250m at Kiteezi dumping site in Kampala, writes Samuel Balagadde.

The goods included counterfeit, substandard and expired foodstuffs and toxic chemicals.

John Mawa, the UNBS market surveillance officer, said the majority of the items were impounded from the city centre last year.

"We could not keep these items for long as they had become dangerous in the stores where we keep other items. There are several other items with pending cases in court that are due to be destroyed," Mawa said.

He said the public should be careful when buying foodstuffs and cosmetics because most of them were fake, yet they are on increase on market. "Efforts are being made to contain this habit."
