Uganda: Makerere Chancellor Defends Police

The public should appreciate and support the Police, the Makerere University chancellor, Prof. Mondo Kagonyera, has said.
"Let the community stop bashing the Police over the way they handled recent riots. They should appreciate and support them in fighting crime," Kagonyera said.
Prof. Kagonyera made the remarks recently while presiding over the installation of the new president of the Rotary Club Kololo at Hotel Africana in Kampala.
The Police have recently been criticised over their handling of opposition gatherings. A few weeks ago, Parliament resolved to institute a probe into the force's conduct after three MPs were roughed up in different parts of the country.
Kagonyera also called upon parents and teachers to ensure discipline among students. He said students were responsible for the recent wave of fires and riots in schools over 'petty' issues.
"Academicians, teachers and parents have an obligation to turn students into better citizens for a better future.
Students' moral values can be transformed to save our society from moral decadence," Kagonyera said.
"The quality of education will improve when students' behaviour changes positively."
