The Government and donors have earmarked sh1.1 trillion for the development of the north.

Uganda will contribute 30% of the funds for the Peace Restoration and Development Plan (PRDP) of the war-torn region, northern uganda minister, David Wakikona, said.

The three-year plan, which will be implemented this financial year, is aimed at empowering and rebuilding northern Uganda, Wakikona added.

The minister made the remarks during the closure of a meeting on the mechanisms through which the civil society can facilitate the implementation of the plan. The event was held at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala on Tuesday.

"The PRDP seeks to contribute to community recovery, improve the conditions and quality of life of displaced persons and reintegration of displaced populations," Wakikona explained.

"It will also initiate rehabilitation and development activities among other resident communities and ensuring that the vulnerable are protected and served."

He said major infrastructure like roads, health centres and schools would be rehabilitated.

Wakikona said other projects like the Northern Uganda Social Action Fund (NUSAF) and the Northern Uganda Rehabilitation Programme would also help people affected by the 20-year-long war start new lives.

NUSAF is a government programme funded by the World Bank to the tune of $113m, meant to eradicate poverty in northern Uganda.

Wakikona commended the progress of NUSAF, saying it had fulfiled 85% of its targets in the region.

"There were a few inconsistencies in the programme but we have put up ways of solving that.

"This time, it is district accounting officers and not chief administrative officers who will account for the PRDP funds."
