It promises to be a festivity of all arts; visual and verbal. The British Council, after running the successful literature festival a few years back, has now turned to promoting all the other arts.
And unlike the literature festival, the British Council is only concentrating on local talent. The WAPI (Words and Pictures) programme will be launched tomorrow at 3:00pm at the People's Space, Hotel Africana.
The event is intended to showcase upcoming and underground artists. It is at the showcase that the more promising artists will be taken on by the British Council and later trained.
"We are bringing business skills to the arts," said Richard Weyers, the British Council country director, at a press conference on Tuesday.
"Apart from showcasing their talent, the artists will be trained on how to market their talent and finance management," he added.
Under the theme, Creativity Unlimited, the festival will attract various artists, including musicians, graffiti artists, poets, video artists, drummers, fashion designers, illustrators, painters, dancers and DJs.
By press time, about 90 artists had registered to attend. From then on, the WAPI programme will run on a monthly basis.
The British Council has been working closely with Music Forum's Geoffrey Ekongot to reach all the barely known artists throughout the country.
Weyers dispelled fears that English will be the language of expression since the event is organised by the British Council. "We are celebrating the creativity of Ugandan artists," he said.
