A Farm Workers Summit in the Northern Cape is expected to look at measures aimed at improving the quality of life for farm workers.
The two-day summit, which started on Thursday, is themed "Improving the quality of life of farm workers, dwellers and their children".
Delegates at the summit will recommend intervention measures aimed at developing mechanisms for the challenging issues affecting farm workers.
According to the spokesperson of the Department of Agriculture and Land Reform, Thabo Mothibi, the summit commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Potato Boycott.
The Potato Boycott exposed and drew attention to the harsh conditions that farmers faced on potato farms near Bethal in Mpumalanga.
This sparked a countrywide boycott of potatoes, leading up to a range of continued uprisings that culminated in the Sharpville Massacre of 1960.
The summit is also running concurrently with the Agri-Consultation Workshop which also aims to address agriculture challenges in the province.
The workshop will review the provincial action plans, including success and challenges, resources and strengths that are available in the province.
It aims to arrive at a consensus of concerns, proposals of solutions that should be carried forward by the province to the national summit.
An outline of key strategies for the sector in the province that are sustainable, practical and make economic sense will also be discussed at the workshop
Delegates at the workshop will also review the Agriculture White Paper and Sector Plan and provide recommendations.
The theme for the Agri-Consultation Workshop is: "War on poverty: towards sustainable food security, job and wealth creation through Agriculture".
Various stakeholders from the provincial land and agricultural sector, farm dwellers and farm workers are attending the Summit and Consultation Workshop.
Some of the delegates include Agriculture and Land Affairs Minister, Lulu Xingwana, Premier Dipuo Peters and MEC for Agriculture and Land Reform, Tina Joemat-Pettersson.
