NOTHING major will happen if the Rugby Cranes (as expected) beat the Makis from Madagascar in a 2011 Rugby World Cup qualifier and Africa Cup game at Kampala Rugby Club on Saturday.

The world rankings for both countries will not change (Uganda is 31 and Madagascar 43), and it will be much too soon to start talking about an actual place in the World Cup. And the Africa Cup is also quite ways away.

Okay, copious amount of beer will be drank, and an unhealthy amount of meat will be eaten. The sports pages will herald the Rugby Cranes for yet another milestone.

But has anybody considered what would happen if (God forbid!) the Rugby Cranes actually lost?

Does anyone even remember when the national rugby team lost at home?

What the rugby fraternity has achieved is so remarkable that almost everyone is taking it for granted.

They won the Africa Cup and became the first Ugandan team to ever do that. Oh, those guys can do that, they are good, in fact they should have done it earlier.

In any case, the best Ugandan sportsman we can think of for last year is some guy who got a medal at yet another athletics meet.

The Rugby Cranes are on the way to become the first Ugandan team to qualify for a senior World Cup? Of course they can, we all know that.

So, what if we lost? Would that earn sympathy from the Ugandan on the street and those grey bureaucrats in the ministries? Nah, they would just shrug their shoulders and mourn another poor show at the Olympics.
