"It was a thriller in Manila." Those were the words coaching director David Dobela used to describe the Rugby Cranes 32-22 victory over Madagascar's Markis in a 2011 Rugby World Cup and 2010 Africa Cup qualifier played Saturday.

"The Madagascar players have improved a lot over the past year and it was not surprising to see them match our play and captialise on our mistakes. We put in a lot of time and resources into this game and I'm happy we've pulled it off," Dobela said after the final whistle.

The Cranes hit the Markis 42-11 in last year's Africa Cup final. The coach reserved special praise for winger Felix Lubega. "Felix is a strong lad. Even when they pulled at him, he kept running. He died for his country. He is one for the future and hopefully he will be okay for the return-leg of the Elgon Cup due in a fortnight," Dobela said. Lubega was taken off the pitch unconscious after colliding with Madagascan player.

Complacency, poor defending and poor kicking blighted Uganda's would be smooth victory but the technical team believes everything will be sorted when the team regroups, nine days to the Elgon Cup. "We didn't defend well but the team showed a lot of heart," said Allan Musoke who scored a dashing try.

"There were so many nervous moments. We cannot afford to be complacent in future ties. I'm delighted team work came in the end," captain John Musoke said.
