Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) will by next month resume flights to five regions, the minister for Infrastructure Development, Dr Shukuru Kawambwa, told Parliament in Dodoma yesterday.

Responding to a question by special seats MP Mhonga Ruhwanya, he mentioned the routes as Kigoma, Tabora, Dodoma, Songea and Shinyanga.

"Logistics and management deficiencies have delayed the re-launching of the routes which was scheduled for last April," he explained.

He mentioned the postponement of flights to Dodoma as an example.

However, he said the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) has the mandate to supervise and regulate air transport safety by ensuring that each locally registered aircraft has a certificate of airworthiness for it to operate.

Dr Kawambwa also promised that the Government would look into the possibility of providing Kigoma airport with security inspection equipment to avoid inconveniences.

He said in an effort to ease transport problems for Kigoma region, the Tanzania Railway Limited (TRL) has ordered 23 coaches which are expected to arrive this month. He explained that the TRL was also planning to increase its passenger train services to Kigoma from Dar es Salaam from the current three to four each week.

He added that the target is to have six passenger train services per week.
