As a first step towards addressing the menace of desertification, Katsina State government has planned to plant at least one million tree seedlings across the 34 local government areas in the state.

The state Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Shehu Shema, disclosed this while launching this year's tree planting season in the state. Similarly, Alhaji Shema has directed all district and village heads and all educational institutions in the state to make sure they plant trees in their areas.

The governor, who particularly urged community leaders to mobilise their subjects for the tree planting exercise, noted that attention would be paid to the desert prone areas.

He has also called on local government council chairmen to revive the young foresters clubs in their areas so as to encourage youths to embrace the culture of tree planting.
