Minister of Environment, Housing and Urban Development, Mrs Halima Alao, yesterday said the country recorded 1,260 oil spills between 2006 and June 2008.
She also said 327 oil impacted sites were certified by the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) during the period.
Alao disclosed this in a keynote address at a stakeholders' consultative workshop on oil and gas sector, organised by the Agency in Calabar.
She gave annual breakdown of the spills as 253 in 2006, 588 in 2007 and 419 in the first two quarters of this year.
According to her, the progressive trend of the incidents was indicative of the grave danger they posed to the country.
"The trend of these sad incidents is indicative of the grave dangers ahead of us as a nation, in terms of polluted environment and its attendant poor health index as well as colossal loss of revenue,"' she said.
Alao said the Agency had commenced the process of developing a " National Oil Spill Compensation Rates.
|
These rates will become a guide for oil industry operations in arriving at acceptable and appropriate compensation to host and transit communities whenever the need arises," she explained, adding that NOSDRA had already developed a National Environmental Sensitivity Map of the Nigerian Coastline, which would be presented for consideration at a workshop in Abuja next month.
