THE Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said players in the tourism sector should work closely with diplomatic missions abroad to market the country as a prime tourist destination.

Permanent Secretary Mr Joey Bimha said tourism players should take advantage of the relationship with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to boost the number of tourists visiting Zimbabwe.

Mr Bimha said the ministry has been conducting specialised diplomatic courses with participants in the tourism sector to help them deal with foreigners from various religious and cultural backgrounds.

Speaking at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe congress held recently Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa (Fedhasa) executive officer Ms Sinikiwe Akanbi said Zimbabwean players in the hospitality sector should take advantage of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

She said the match venue that Zimbabwe and to a lesser extent Zambia should be able to benefit from was Polokwane in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, as it was the closest to Zimbabwe.

"There is a serious shortage of rooms in South Africa for the event", Ms Akanbi said.

"It would make business sense to register with the Fifa website, as the rooms would be paid for whether or not they were all occupied."

In terms of the contract, 80 to 100 percent of the rooms had to meet standards set by MATCH (a company appointed by Fifa for the event), which would pay for them, regardless of whether or not they were all made use of by soccer fans.

The room rate should be based on the normal winter or summer rate plus 16 percent.

African Sun has already been approved by MATCH with the group's chief executive Mr Shingi Munyeza saying that Fifa was willing to accommodate between 1 000 and 2 000 guests at the soccer showcase.

Both Mr Munyeza and Ms Akanbi said that outside South Africa the 2010 World Cup was just a tourism event.
