AUTHORITIES in Kaberamaido recently burnt over 20 illegal fish nets.

The acting district fisheries officer, Joseph Agaja, said the nets were confiscated from landing sites on the shores of Lake Kyoga.

The burning of the gear took place at Kaberamaido Central Police Station and was witnessed by the Police; the district leadership; the resident district commissioner, John Eresu; and the public.

Eresu decried the practice of using illegal fishing gear, saying it depleted the fisheries resources. He urged those who owned illegal nets to surrender before they are prosecuted.

He regretted that the natural resources in the district, especially forests, had been grossly depleted for commercial charcoal burning, contrary to the Government policy of environmental conservation.

He urged communities to refrain from such illegal practices and focus on agriculture.
