Police in Arusha deserve kudos for foiling an attempt to rob tourists. Several gangsters clad in police uniforms had stopped a convoy heading for the Serena Mountain Village Lodge in Tengeru in the key northern tourist circuit. They failed, thanks to the prompt intervention of the officers.

That the robbers retreated to their hideouts empty-handed, thanks to the arrival of the police patrol unit, demonstrates readiness by the force to protect our visitors and ourselves.

Their commendable action, not only averted harm and loss of property, but will go a mile further in convincing tourists that their safety is assured once in this land. When visitors come to Tanzania they do so expecting to get the most out of it, by safely visiting our famed tourist attractions. The more they stay, the more they spend, and the more the economy is boosted.

The fact that the bandits had posed as policemen manning a roadblock would have also tarnished the image of the force. To the officers, we once again say, well done and step up the security patrol efforts. These bandits must be stopped at all costs, as they pose a grave threat to an industry that brings in the foreign exchange the country badly needs.
