Abia State University, Uturu, said it may loose over N1billion on the menace of erosion if urgent steps are not taken to address the problem.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Mkpa Agwu Mkpa, made the disclosure in an interview with leadership in his office at Uturu

Mkpa stated that currently, two of the institution's buildings, the faculty of human materials and social sciences, the school library and hostels may be cut off from the academic area if urgent attention is not given by the Federal Government.

The Vice Chancellor revealed that the University spends about N25million each year in checkmating erosion in the school and appealed to the Federal Government as well as other public spirited persons and groups to come to the aid of the institution.

Meanwhile, a team of erosion control experts from the Federal Ministry of Environment, Housing and Urban Development have described the erosion problem in Abia State as very challenging

The leader of the team, Mr. Adekunle Shokoya, made this known in an interview with LEADERSHIP in Umuahia after a call of the erosion sites in the compnay of the Commisioner of Environment, Prince Emeka Onuoha.

Shokoya, who noted that the state was one of the worst hit by the maneace in the country, pointed out that all the sites affected by erosion would not be given attention at the same time as other states were affected by the same problem.

He said his ministry would tackle only two erosion sites in each state of the federation, adding that a recommendation would be made to ensure that every state received equal amount of money so that extra funds could be used to tackle newly discovered erosion sites.
