THE Government is in advanced stages of procuring a ferry to replace MV Kabalega.

The ferry, which was carrying 800 tonnes of wheat collided with MV Kaawa in May 2005 and sunk into Lake Victoria.

The collision left MV Kaawa as the country's only ferry.

Jim Mugunga, the Privatisation Unit's spokesman, said: "We are in the process of getting a marine expert to advise us on various specifics."

The ferry, which is an alternative part of the railway system, connects the transport network in Kenya to the one in Uganda.
