THE First Lady, Janet Museveni, yesterday held talks with the former president of Latvia, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, at State House Entebbe.

Vike-Freiberga, who is a member of the Club of Madrid, is touring Africa for talks with governments and non-governmental organisations on how to prevent gender-based violence on the continent.

The Club of Madrid is an organisation dedicated to strengthening democracy around the world by drawing experiences and resources of its 70 members, who are former heads of state.

During the meeting with Janet, who is also the Ruhaama MP, Vike-Freiberga commended Uganda's leadership levels, which she said were gender-sensitive.

According to a statement from State House, she appealed to the First Lady to use her position to advocate for a law that would address the plight of Ugandan women.

Vike-Freiberga also met several Uganda government officials including Prime Minister Prof. Apolo Nsibambi and Rebecca Kadaga the Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

Janet thanked the Club of Madrid for uplifting the lives of African women.

Prof. Ruth Oniang'o, a former Kenyan MP and a member of the Club of Madrid and Winnie Matsiko, the chairperson of the Uganda Women Parliamentarian Association, attended the meeting.
