A senior official of government who once played a key role in the country's quest for political change has presented a graphic picture of what led to the military struggle in the 1980's that culminated into the death of President William R. Tolbert and subsequently the November 12, 1985 abortive invasion.
National Security Advisor Dr. Boima Fahnbulleh told a gathering of Liberians Wednesday that the failed November 12 invasion was launched from Neighboring Sierra Leone by the late Gen. Thomas Quiwonkpa, Commanding General of the People's Redemption Council (PRC) who was eventually captured and killed following the abortive invasion.
He alleged that Harry Greaves, Managing Director of the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC), Tom Kamara, Publisher/ proprietor of the New Democrat, Harry Yuan, Managing Director of the LEC, Archie Williams of the Liberia Domestic Airline and Tonia King among others were part of the November 12 invasion.
Dr. Fahnbulleh explained that these were individuals he saw in Sierra Leone with Gen. Quiwonkpa before the invasion.
According to the former political activist, the purpose of the invasion was intended to overthrow the leader of the military junta of Samuel Doe who was widely criticized by the opposition and the international community of abusing his people.
He disclosed that Gen. Quiwonkpa invaded Liberian with 29 men including Harry Greaves and Publisher Kamara.
Dr. Fahnbulleh made the revelation Wednesday during hearing of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) held at the Centennial Pavilion on Ashmun Street in Monrovia. His testimony which was broadcast live on radio was attended by prominent individuals including Senator Prince Johnson who is expected to appear before the TRC next week.
The National Security Advisor who spoke for more than seven hours was applauded on several occasions by the audience whenever he presented a historical analysis which the public felt was thoroughly comprehensible.
Dr. Fahnbulleh disclosed that he was leader of the Popular Democratic Front (PDF) which had over 64 well trained military men who were politically and militarily prepared for the task of militarism.
He said the PDF did not operate after 1990-91 since an Interim Government of National Unity elected in Banjul, The Gambia was already formed.
Asked whether the US Government supported the 1980 coup d'état, Dr. Fahnbulleh, a former Political Science Professor of the University of Liberia, said the Americans did not support the coup led by Mr. Doe because they didn't know President Doe and the other coup makers.
However, he pointed out that if Mr. Doe and others had not led the April 12, 1980 coup, former President William Tolbert (killed by Doe's forces) would have been overthrown because there were two coups in the making.
One, he narrated was organized by a powerful Colonel identified as William Jarbo and the other, was hatched by Tolbert's Vice President Bishop Bennie Warner who, according to Fahnbulleh was abroad when the coup took place.
Responding to question whether the visit of Mr. Doe at the Freeport of Monrovia in 1991 was intended for him to leave the country, Dr. Fahnbulleh, a former Foreign Minister during the military regime, said he believes that the former President had gone to the Port to meet Gen Albert Quinno, former Force Commander of ECOWAS Peace Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) based on a request of the Guinean President Lansana Conte for him to leave the country.
However, he indicated that just about the time that Mr. Doe and Gen. Quinno were meeting at the Port, elements of the Independent National Patriotic Front of Liberia (INPFL) led by Mr. Johnson began making advances which eventually turned out chaotic; Doe was captured and killed.
Fahnbulleh observed that the history of Liberia's bloody past was triggered by injustices and lack of political consciousness on the party of the TWP government to ascribe to reform.

It amazes me to know that Madam Ellen Sirleaf was never mentioned by Dr. Boima Fahnbulleh as one of the conspirators to dethrone Samuel Doe by way of Sierra Leone. It is clear that Dr. Fahnbulleh hopes to vindicate Madam Sirleaf, but the reality is that Dr. Fahnbulleh had previously indicted Madam Sirleaf as the main agent of this conspiracy.
You really underestimated the problems faced by many third world countries during the cold war. You need to do a little more reseach to find out who were behind the different coups that took place in Africa and else where. Try and find the book called 'Covert Operation' of the 1980's, then you will really understand the dirtiness of the super powers. In that book, you will find that the CIA was involved in the overthrowning of Dr. Tolbert. Doe was inncent and he would had told you if he was alive today.
Yes, there were problems internally, but Tolbert… [Read Full Text]
Who cares about this old worn-out news? We all know from recent history that the actions of Dr. Fahnbulleh himself have played a key role in bringing Liberians to their knees. Just read his "Liberia and Democracy" where he sounds like a hero. The truth is, he and the people he's naming now have preyed on the people of Liberia for their own personal motives.
As Liberians are trying to get their lives back in order, we dont need to be reminded about the horific events of the past, especially not from the self-centered, pretending-to-care Dr. Fahnbulleh. He needs to… [Read Full Text]

How naive to believe that CIA agents were present at the Mansion and carried out the execution of Tolbert. (Cllr. Cheapoo quoted Mrs. Tolbert as informing him that her husband was shot by a 'white man') Mrs. Tolbert is dreaming.... Do you really believe a CIA agent would allow himself to be seen killing a Head of State? couldn't the CIA agent have been black? and even if the CIA had done the killing they wouldn't have allowed Mrs. Tolbert to live to tell Cllr. Cheapoo anything. Liberians have been proven to believe anything, they love the… [Read Full Text]
