A team of medical Doctors from the Republic of Mali is in the country to render surgical operations to fistula patients around the country.
The four doctors are Prof. Kalilu Outtara, team leader and urologist at the Malian Teaching hospital; Youssouf Yaxwe, General Surgeon; Dr. Aissata Samasseuou, General Surgeon; and Dr. Moloisaly Sidibe, Surgical Assistant.
The team is headed by a renowned Malian Doctor, Prof. Kalilu Ouattara, a Urologist from the Teaching Hospital in that country.
In an interview with the head of delegation of the team, Prof. Ouattara said the aim of their visit to Liberia is to strengthen a cordial relationship that exists between fistula doctors in Mali and Dr. John Mulbah and other fistula doctors in the country.
Prof. Ouattara who has done several surgical operations around Africa including Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea said fistula is a public hazard not only in Liberia but Africa as a whole and as such, government must support fistula programs to save the lives of women and girls who die daily due to lack of care.
He then called on the government of Liberia to get involved in the process by empowering the Liberia Fistula Project in order to save Liberian women who have come down with the sickness. Dr. Ouattara said due to the nature of fistula, many doctors are not willing to do operation on patients of fistula. "But those who have volunteered to do this must be given all support needed to enhance their work," Prof. Ouattara noted.
The campaign against fistula commenced on August 1, 2004 headed by the Liberia Fistula Project. According to the Program Manager of the project, Dr. John Mulbah, a team of fistula doctors including the Malian doctors are by now in Sinoe County and expected to visit other counties to intensify the campaign.
Already, the team of doctors has treated over 20 patients in Montserrado County and expected to treat over 35 fistula patients who have gathered in Sinoe County.
'Grand Bassa, Maryland and Grand Gedeh Counties are the next targets after completing operations in Sinoe," Dr. Mulbah told this paper.
