Liberia: Malian Doctors Performing Surgery On Fistula Patients

A four-man Malian medical team is expected to perform surgical operations for more than 100 patients suffering from fistula sickness in Montserrado, Nimba, Grand Gedeh and Grand Bassa counties shortly.
The delegation, which arrived in Liberia on Monday, has performed surgical operation on eighteen patients at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Monrovia.
Fistula sickness is an abnormal connection between the bladder or the rectum and the vagina leading to a continuous leakage of urine or stools as a result of an abnormality during birth or trauma.
Speaking through an interpreter, the head of the Malian medial team, Dr. Kalilu Ouattaru said the aimed of their mission was to strengthen the friendly ties between Liberia and Mali which existed over the years.
He said despite the language barrier, Liberians and Malians are the same people.
Dr. Ouattaru, also a Professor at the teaching hospital in Mali, urged the Liberian government to train more doctors to cater to people suffering from the fistula sickness.
He further assured that they would continue to visit Liberia to render services to the population.
According to the head of the Fistula Unit at the JFK Medical Center, Dr. John Mulbah, the free surgical operations for fistula patients is being sponsored by UNFPA in collaboration with the Liberian government.
Dr. Mulbah disclosed that over 35 fistula patients were awaiting their arrival in Sanniquellie in Nimba County for operations.
He indicated that the Liberian government in collaboration UNFPA is expected to send about 15 medical practitioners to Mali to undergo one-month fistula management training.
The rest of the visiting Malian medical team includes, Dr. Youssouf Yaxwe, General Surgeon, Dr. Aissatta Samasseuou and Molobaly Sidibe, surgical Assistant.
