As government struggles to help residents of Luweero Triangle to improve living standards through the National Agricultural Advisory Services, it has emerged that farmers were supplied off layer chickens and poor quality banana suckers.

Daily Monitor visited the farmers and according to Ms Zaliya Nanyonga of Nakibinga in Mityana, the 30 layers she received three months ago cannot give her any eggs.

"When they brought them (chicken) at least they could lay 14 eggs a day but now I can get only two eggs," said Ms Nanyonga. Another poultry farmer in Namyeso village, Busimbi Sub-county, Mr Sulaiman Nganda did not have kind words for Naads saying the chicken he got were even making him poorer.

"They gave us these birds as a group of seven but all the others have withdrawn because we have to get money for medicine and it is expensive" said Mr Nganda adding that when they complained, the officers accused them of sabotaging Naads efforts.

One farmer, Mr Godfrey Munyawera of Kizimizo village, Kasota Sub-county in Mityana said: "They made me remove my healthy bananas only to be given these poor quality ones." Ms Sylvia Nabakooza, who owns a piggery in Busimbi Sub-county, told Daily Monitor that although she was given a pig, the promised feeds of 270kg were never delivered in full.

A Special Presidential Advisor on security in Buganda Region, Brig. Kasirye Ggwanga, told Daily Monitor during the tour of Luweero Triangle that the government officials had misused the money. "The money is released but someone either at the ministry or district headquarters is squandering it," Brig Kasirye said.

He said more than 10 boreholes in Nakaseke, Luweero and Mityana Districts were not functioning yet Luweero Triangle Minister Nyombi Thembo claimed he had used Sh100 billion on water projects in the region.

But Mr Thembo said the money Brig. Kasirye was talking about was meant to improve water supply in 29 districts and Sh20 billion had been spent on Mityana alone adding that some of the boreholes that were spoilt broke down because of the hydrology of the place.

Commenting on the Naads service, Mr Thembo said since President Museveni recommended reforms this year, better results should be expected by December. The Mityana Naads Coordinator, Mr Daniel Seremba blamed the farmers for neglecting to feed the chicken.

"These birds were certified by technical people from the district veterinary office. It is only that the farmers are not feeding them," Mr Seremba said. He, however, said the Kampala office was delaying to send them money and this was sabotaging the Naads activities.
