The reward for hard work is an opportunity to do more. Consequently, the Uganda Rugby Cranes 32-22 win over Madagascar presents them with a place in the 2010 Africa Cup and 2011 Rugby World Cup (RWC) semi-final draw to be conducted today (Friday) in Durban, South Africa.
International Rugby Board (IRB) referee Ramsey Olinga is expected to represent Ugandan ruggers, who are within two games of the 2011 RWC set for New Zealand.
Uganda will face either of Tunisia, Namibia or Cote D'Voire who topped groups; A, B and C respectively. Semifinals will be played followed by a final, home and away, the winner of which will qualify directly for RWC as Africa 1.
The loser will progress to the cross-continental play-off for the final qualifying place. Coach Yayiro Musisi Kasasa is not bothered by who the next opponents are.
"At the moment, you cannot prefer any team to the other. If they got this far, then are all even and we must be prepared for anyone," he said. Meanwhile, a 24-man team has been named to represent Uganda at the Confederation of Africa Rugby (CAR) U-19 Africa Cup in Tunisia from August 20-30. Lock Daniel Canowira will lead his peers.
The bulk of the team has been chosen from the Shield League and this season's schools' rugby season which was dominated by Namilyango College. 19-year-old Rugby Cranes' understudy fly-half Ambrose Kamanyiire is also part of the team.
The 'Baby Cranes', under the stewardship of coaches Brain Makalama, Fred Mudoola and Brian Tabaruka are drawn in Pool A alongside champions Namibia, Morocco and Madagascar.
