The acute housing problems leading to rent hikes in the growing South West Provincial Capital of Buea will soon be of the past.

The ecumenical Christian organization known as Habitat for Humanity International, seeking to alleviate poor housing across the world has set foot in Dibanda - Buea (Mile 14). The project will not only supply houses for the needy but ensure good planning and housing conditions for the environment.

The South West is the fourth laps after the West, Centre and North West Provinces . In partnership with the Buea - based Woodwork, Construction, Marketing and Agricultural Consultancy (WACOMAC) the Christian group organized a two-phase seminar in Buea recently to train partners on the housing scheme, rules of engagement and benefits to be derived while participating in the habitat project.

Habitat Cameroon's national director, Roch Ghislain Souabedet and their executing partner, WACOMAC's managing director, Eric Akem Zabze animated the workshop. They explained that willing and serious persons could subscribe to the housing scheme and get their homes in some three months and pay the cost over an agreed period of time. They cleared doubts and stated that the housing programme was non- profit making but not free also. According to Souabedet, each partner must pay back the cost of his or her house in order to enable build a house for another partner. In all situations, they explained, a house must not exceed cfa 1 million 200 thousand in cost especially as all building material would be supplied from producing industries.

The workshop presented a programme of 75 houses in Dibanda (Mile 14 Buea) where an appropriate piece of land had been legally acquired. Some 40 participants were in attendance and Zabze informed them that the chief idea was to sell the project to the general public and potential beneficiaries.

Two schemes were presented to include a housing project and Renovation/Completion scheme. Participants imbibed the rules of engagement, criteria and procedures as well as expectations. Discussions concurred against project killers such as dishonesty and tribalism.

The Dibanda 75- house project is a pilot one for the South West Province upon whose success subsequent ones will depend.

In attendance was the Dibanda Chief, Ikome Ngale, who gave assurance that the land acquired by Habitat at mile 14 was free of any problems.
