A group calling itself , the Concerned Citizens Association of Prestea has raised the red flag on the decision by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) not to allow a public hearing on the Prestea South Project to be undertaken by Golden Star Resource Bogoso/Prestea limited.
According to the group investigations conducted into the activities of the EPA management and the Community Affairs Manager of the company has created a lot of problems for the people within Prestea and it environs.
"Our painstaking investigations have shown that the management of the company in collaboration with the EPA management has been able to append their signature on a secret document that no EPA Public Hearing should be held on their new Prestea South Project for no apparent reasons," they added.
A statement issued by the association and signed by Mr. Dominic Nyame called on the management of the EPA to ensure that the right thing as is required by law is done to for stall future public out cry and litigation.
"We are in an election year and we would not allow anybody to disturb the fragile peace that we have been enjoying since 2002 in Prestea and will not allow ourselves to be cheated this time as was done to us in June 28th 2002 and October 24th 2002."
They indicated that during that period at the EPA Public hearing at Prestea the military who are still in Prestea with the excuse of controlling armed robbery but in reality protecting the interest of the company oppressed them thus making it impossible for them to get a good deal from the company.
The Association alleged that the current refusal by the EPA is a calculated attempt by certain group of people to cause confusion so that the government would declare a state of emergency within Prestea and its environs.
They enquired from the EPA whether the company has completed the Prestea North Project and if so what they are doing about the huge pits that have been left uncovered after mining. They also want to know how long it would take them to close the pit and what happened to the remaining buildings which have developed cracks as a result of the company's mining activities.
