Nigeria has called for the strengthening and formalisation of trade relations between it and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The Nigerian minister of state 1 for foreign affairs, Alhaji Tijjani Kaura, made the call yesterday when he received the newly appointed Saudi ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Khaled Omar Y. Abdrabu, in Abuja. The minister said the time had come for Nigeria and Saudi Arabia to work closely with the view to harmonising as well as formalising the trade relations between the two nations.
He noted that trade relations between the two nations have been going on for a very long time, though in an informal manner. Alhaji Kaura, added that the trade relations between the people of Saudi Arabia and their Nigerian counterparts had been on for more than 70 years now, but that it was in an informal manner.
The minister further said that the huge number of Nigerian pilgrims had been responsible for the high volume of trade activities between the two nations which should now be made more formal. He maintained that formalisation of the trade between the two states would not only ensure that Nigerians are secured but also guaranteed whenever they are in the Saudi Kingdom. He noted that it was apt that the new diplomat was resuming in the country at a time when Nigeria was working towards becoming among top 20 nations in the world by the year 2020, as well as the current seven-point agenda of the administration. He said that as a result of this, there was the need to expand the relations to include new areas such as agriculture, transportation, amongst several others.
Speaking earlier, the Saudi ambassador promised that he would work with all in the country so that the existing trade is better enhanced during his duty tour in Nigeria for the benefit of all.
