IT was joy and laughter as Nino Omar, a Somali woman, was reunited with a UPDF soldier, Joshua Asiza, whom she says fathered her four-month-old son.

The 30-minute meeting took place on Monday at the residence of Hussein Hassan, the chairman of the Somali community.

Scores of Somali nationals, mainly refugees, swarmed Hassan's residence in Kisenyi to have a glimpse of Asiza.

"I am happy the officer came and had a brief chat with his lady. He also saw the baby before the meeting was disrupted by the people," Hassan said.

He added that because of the large number of people, Asiza requested to leave and meet Nino again later for a private chat.

"He felt uncomfortable and wanted to hold private talks with his woman. He will come back soon," Hassan said.

Asiza is a UPDF warrant officer II. He was formerly deployed among the first contingent of the 1,600-strong African Union peace keeping force in Mogadishu.

But Asiza is currently facing trial for what UPDF spokesperson Maj. Paddy Ankunda described as 'acts detrimental to the UPDF conduct and rules of procedure.'

However, Asiza denied the meeting. "I have not met the woman. I am at my home in Luweero and am not supposed to comment. Talk to Afande Ankunda for details," he said on phone.

Nino says she first met Asiza when she took her sick father to the AMISON hospital in Mogadishu where he served as a medical personnel.
