After two months of recess, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon resume their campaign for the World Cup in South Africa and Africa Cup of Nations in Angola on September 6, with a return leg match against Cape Verde. In preparation for this encounter, some 21 players of the national football team have been called to camp in Lisbon, Portugal from September 1st to 3rd.
There are no major changes in the squad selected by team coach, Otto Pfister, with some old names left out and new blood injected. The most remarkable absence on the list is that of prolific goal fetcher, Samuel Eto'o Fils, who is facing a match suspension after accumulating yellow cards in the last two encounters with the national selection. The other absentee landlords include and Joel Epalle who had a mediocre performance during the return leg match against Tanzania in Yaounde last June 21.
On the other hand, there have been several new comers into the squad. Owing to their brilliant performance in the Olympic Games in Beijing, players like Frank Songo'o and Christian Bekamenga, have gained admission into the national team.
Cameroon began the campaign on a good footing with a 2-0 victory over Cape Verde in Yaounde. The Indomitable Lions moved up a higher gear in the second encounter with a 3-0 victory over the Mauritius Island before being held to a zero-all tie by the Taifa Stars of Tanzania in the third encounter. The Lions commenced the return leg just as they had started it, with a 2-1 victory over Tanzania that held them to a goalless draw barely a week earlier. Cameroon currently tops the group with ten points, closely followed by Cape Verde with 9 points. Any false step from Cameroon could see the Cape Verde take over the leadership of the group which could cause a repeat of the 2006 world Cup nightmare.
