Trade minister Janat Mukwaya has urged residents of Buvuma County to go slow in their pursuit for district status.

She said the Government is taking services to the people, but could not "do everything at a go".

The minister said that when residents of Kayunga district asked for autonomy from Mukono, the Government did not block their demands. "It is the same with Buikwe. After that, it will be Buvuma, but you have to be patient."

Mukwaya said Mukono, with 24 sub-counties and four town councils, was one of the biggest districts in Uganda.

She was addressing residents of Buikwe at a meeting with the Buikwe district steering committee.

The local government minister Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, went to Buikwe to ascertain the feasibility of the proposed district recently.

Buikwe will become a district once the NRM caucus endorses and Parliament ratifies it.

Moses Lwanga, the chairperson of the Buikwe committee, said they wanted district status to bring services nearer to the people. "Aspiring leaders shouldn't be up for jobs alone, but ensuring that social services are brought nearer to people."
