Uganda's efforts to reduce child mortality by two thirds by the year 2015 may not be achievable, a Unicef report has revealed.

The 2007 report said much as Uganda aims at reducing child mortality by two thirds, it may not achieve the goal given the statistics of 2006 which stood at 75/1000 (at birth) and 137/1000 (under 5years) respectively against the desired goals of 31/1000 and 56/1000 respectively.

"More than 20 per cent of the under five mortality rate occurs in the first month regardless of urban /rural residence, birth intervals, birth order, wealth quintile or level of mother's education, yet the rate is higher among boys (42) than it is for girls (23)," the report reads in part.

It says that Kampala district records the lowest under five-mortality rate but that even then, it stands at 94. The same report also revealed Uganda's target to reduce maternal mortality ratio by 131/100, 000 is unlikely to be achieved.
