Prof. Enoh Tanjong of the University of Buea has earned another recognition as the best journalism trainer in the country.
The Cameroon Association of English Speaking Journalists, CAMASEJ, recognised Professor Enoh Tanjong for his role in training media practitioners in the country, during its recent general assembly meeting that took place in Buea. He was recognised alongside ace journalist, Sam Nuvala Fonkem, for their various contributions to the development of journalism in the country.
This is the second recognition for Prof. Tanjong in barely six months. In February this year, the Cameroon Union of Journalists, CUJ, Buea Branch, also recognised him as the best journalism trainer in the country.
Enoh Tanjong, who is the Vice Dean of Programmes and Academic Affairs at the University of Buea, was the pioneer chair and brain behind the Journalism and Mass Communication Department, JMC, of that University.
Reacting to the recognition, Prof. Tanjong said: "I am overwhelmed, honoured and privileged to receive such an award." "Whenever I listen to the radio or watch television, or get in touch with former JMC students; that, to me, is a way of filling the void that is in the media landscape in the country.
I think this is my modest contribution in moulding young talents in the country," he said.
In 1993, Professor Tanjong, Dr. George Ngwa and Mrs Bertha Ndoh, laid the foundation for the JMC Department, which has become one of the most vibrant departments in the university.
Writing about Enoh in 2006, late Dr. Bate Besong described him as a global scholar. "Enoh has brought new insights into campus relationships... his national and trans-tribal outlook and commitment has no parallel in the Cameroon University system. As the pioneer chair of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication...Tanjong not only transformed JMC into a robust Mecca of journalism... but he forged a much-needed alternative forum for serious analysis and discussion by proffering eclectic paradigms to the problems facing the media today," the article reads in parts.
The strength of the journalism training programme, according to Tanjong, is based on intelligence, resourcefulness and very high ethical morals.Notwithstanding the passion and immense contribution of the lecturers of the Department, Tanjong expressed fears that the programme might be loosing its quality because the number of students keeps increasing every year and there is a shortage of trained staff.
He, however, said to ensure that his long-held dream of a full cycle for the programme comes to fruition; the Department would start a Masters and PhD Programme in October. Enoh lauded the introduction of the Bachelor Master PhD Programme, BMP, which, according to him, will enable ample training of graduates.
Besides his administrative responsibilities and lecturing at the University, Tanjong is also visiting lecturer to some Universities in the US. Tanjong also does consultancy in the form of research; analysis, study, assessments for organisations on both national and international levels.
