Monrovia

Relatives of the late Liberian President Samuel Kanyon Doe, led by Mr. Jackson E. Doe and Nimba County Senator Prince Y. Johnson have met at the Foreign Ministry in Monrovia.

The meeting between the two sides was called by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Monday to calm recent bitter exchanges between the relatives of the former Liberian President and Senator Johnson following testimonies before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) by the Nimba County senator on his role regarding the death of the former Liberian President.

The President thanked Senator Johnson and Minister Doe for accepting an invitation to discuss the recent misunderstanding between the two sides. The Liberian leader urged both men to exercise leadership and take the lead in promoting peace and reconciliation as the country recovers from its bitter past because their people look up to them for direction.

According to an Executive Mansion release, President Johnson Sirleaf observed that all Liberians were affected by the conflict which engulfed the country and spoke of the need to put behind the bitter past and move forward in the spirit of national reconciliation.

"We all have a responsibility to ensure that the events of the past are never repeated in this country," the Liberian leader reminded Minister Doe and Senator Johnson, adding, 'we have a responsibility to spare our children of what we have gone through so that they don't carry with them the resentment."

In remarks, the two men welcomed the decision by the Liberian leader to convene the meeting, which they described as timely. They agreed that all Liberians have a responsibility to promote peace because without peace there can be no progress, and promised to work toward the achievement of total peace between the peoples of Grand Gedeh and Nimba as well as among Liberians.

"We are all in the country because of your exemplary leadership," they maintained, and assured the President that the two sides will work towards promoting peace and unity among not only the peoples of Nimba and Grand Gedeh but Liberians in general.

Meanwhile, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has welcomed suggestions for a meeting between the people of Nimba and Grand Gedeh to celebrate the peace which Liberia now enjoys. The President said such a meeting would provide an opportunity to thank the people of both counties for their decision to allow peace to prevail in the country. The venue for the proposed meeting, it was suggested, could be a border town between the two counties, to be held at the end of the year.

The President also reiterated her government's plans to accord appropriate burial to former leaders who died while in office. The exercise, the President said was necessary as part of the healing process as the nation puts to rest the pains of the past.

Had this been a feud between just the Johnson and Doe’s families, the truce or reconciliation would have made more sense. And had the person calling for and mediating this truce or reconciliation been neutral in the conflict, the gestures would have garnered admiration even from her most devout critics. Isn’t she implicated in the November 12, 1986 coup attempt (perhaps the genesis of the Krahn and Gio conflict) and the December 24, 1989 rebel invasion? These dead olive branches been exchanged between the Johnson and Doe’s families now and the Tolbert and Doe’s families before miss their… [Read Full Text]

Boy.. What an insult. This President don't really get it. It seems to me she is "IRROGANT" I am just following what my brother SWAYLEE brilliantly wrote. Haven't read his comments I just need not to add more. Thousands of our fellow Liberian lost their lives senselessly. Someone should please tell this woman that it was because of the deeds of she and her cohorts. Prince Johnson have already apologise to the Doe family. He shouldn't have done that. Hell no. Jackson Doe who enjoyed the fruits of his brother's brutallity was no where to be found when it really… [Read Full Text]
