THE countdown to the 11th edition of Zimbabwe International Film Festival Trust, a film extravaganza began yesterday with more than 100 films set to hit the big screens in and around the capital.

Isabel Manuel, the festival manager, said at least 10 films including two feature films and the rest short films as well as animation were from local producers.

She however, said they were expecting close to 15 locally produced films to be screened during the film festival.

Last year, the festival attracted 14 short films, three features and one documentary which were all vying for top honours in the Calabash Award for Best Zimbabwean production.

"A lot of people are concentrating on the short film because of money," she said.

This year's edition to be held under the theme: "The Art of Film as Art" was aimed at raising the film medium to the same level as that of music and other dominant art genres.

"It's basically about entertainment, not just film but also music, décor, among others, all encompassed."

She also said workshops on the aspects of filmmaking would be run together with master classes that would commence four days before the festival.

"There would also be a panel of discussions.

"We are promising good films and entertainment across the board," she said.

Meanwhile, as has become the norm, the film fete will present an exciting line up of feature films brought in by Embassies based in the country.

The feature film category brings together a host of award winning films released from different eras that carry diverse as well as intricate narratives.

Embassies that will take part will include the British, Brazil, Canadian, French, Germany, Indian, Japanese and the Korean embassies.
